An Establishment of the Tuberculosis Network in the District of Colombo.

Colombo The prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) has been increasing among diverse communities including some sexual groups and drug users, highlighting the need for targeted intervention programs. In response, a TB awareness program for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSO) was conducted at Colombo District on 21st October 2024. The event was held at the Auditorium of CENWOR and featured the participation of Dr. Sarath Bandara, District Tuberculosis Control Officer and Mr. K.A.R.S. Weerakoon, Public Health Inspector from Central Chest Clinic situated at the Medical Research Institute premises Borella.

The program was organized by Heart to Heart Lanka organization which is one of the member organizations of Country Coordinating Mechanism Sri Lanka.  Technical and financial support was provided by Diversity And Solidarity Trust (DAST). Several CCM Member organizations such as Mithuru Mithuro and ChildFund Sri Lanka were among the participants together with the Executive Secretary and Oversight Officer of CCMSL.

The disease burden in the Colombo District highlighting the very high notification in the Colombo Municipality, signs and symptoms, diagnosis tools, treatment and care, contact tracing and follow up were among the points discussed. The role which could be played by the CBOs and CSOs were discussed and a plea is pledged for everyone to get together to work in the prevention of TB and to work hand in hand with the Central Chest Clinic Colombo.

A Tuberculosis Network was established as a way forward at the end of the program.
